“Stop Killing Insects” T-Shirt
My original design, not available anywhere else in the biosphere.
I’m old enough to remember back to when there were a LOT more insects. My criteria for that evaluation is not very scientific, yet very conclusive…to me anyway…it’s my memory of how many dead bugs accumulated on car windshields, side mirrors, headlights and hoods, back then compared to now. There are way, way less now! I’d honestly say at least 90% less. I heard a native Brit make the exact same observation (except bonnet instead of hood) about vastly fewer insects in the U.K.
Our unusually cold spring resulted in virtually zero bees or any other insects when warm weather arrived and flowers came out. Their absence was viscerally disturbing…recalling the title of Rachel Carson’s book, “Silent Spring.” I get that insects can wreak havoc on crops, trees, stored foods, and so on—calling for controls of some kind. But humans are decimating insect numbers globally. We must dial it back. I’m no expert on the subject, but this guy from the University of Florida is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhSgzInOHIY&t=161s — give a 5 minute listen to see what small parts you and I can play in preserving insect diversity and numbers for future generations of our descendents, as well as for the billions of reptiles, amphibians, birds…and on up the food chain to mammals—all of whom depend on insects for survival. And even if we didn’t depend on them, they are amazing creatures and have just as much right as humans to inhabit this beautiful planet where they have evolved over the eons, along with us. Doesn’t it seem cowardly, arrogant, belligerent and cruel of us to poison them as profusely as we are now on a worldwide scale?!?
